A Day of Boating on the Norfolk Broads

I may receive a commission if you purchase something mentioned in this post. More details here.

Something we’ve wanted to do for a very long time now is to rent a boat and explore the channels of the Norfolk Broads. Jeff’s birthday two weeks ago was the perfect opportunity to do this! We had our last set of visitors for the summer, and the weather was nice, so we packed some drinks and snacks and headed out for the adventure. We got the most affordable boat, which was plenty big for the five of us.

Getting to drive a little motorboat on your birthday is pretty cool, I think.

Our friends asked us if our clouds are always like this… Yes, they really are!

Jeff and our friend Mark took turns as captain, and we ladies just enjoyed. Homemade Blackberry Cider helped! We couldn’t go very fast at all, so the pace was more soothing than exhilirating. And the views were pretty.

Can you see the specks of birds below? This is a great way to do some bird watching…

We docked and headed for a pub.

The Duke’s Head was a nice five minute scenic walk from the water.

Here, we found something novel and lovely– Elderflower Beer! It was really good. I have thought about this drink a few times since that afternoon.

And we had party guests, for once!

Back to the boats, for our leisurely crawl back.

I loved seeing people out, just relaxing.

Parking the boat proved a little challenging, but we were very lucky to have a more experienced driver on board with us (thanks, Mark!)  We thoroughly enjoyed this relatively simple pleasure, tooting around on the water on a sunny and sometimes cloudy afternoon. Another English experience and another birthday down! Next time, we might get canoes– the waters aren’t too busy, and it will be fun to get even closer to the fish in there.

Ahh – lovely, lovely, lovely!! Thanks for bringing us along for the ride 🙂 The one bit I loved the most about this – was being able to stop and stroll for a pub break! We have rivers and waterways around here – but none of them drop you off near a lovely English pub! lol

Hi, thank you for those lovely pictures and wonderful memories of Norfolk. I arrived in Norwich on the 3rd September 1977 and the date for this entry coincides. So wonderful to have ‘gone back’ there again.

Lovely, If you think a day was relaxing, you should try it for a week. It is the most relaxing de-stressing holiday ever. There are cruisers to suit all budgets and tastes. Mooring up outside a pub or even just throwing the mud weight overboard in one of the large broads and being surrounded by water.
